Anomaly update!
over 2 years ago – Fri, Oct 08, 2021 at 12:53:17 PM

Good evening!

There's been a lot of great anomaly activity of recent, so let's give you the full run-down!

Social Stretch Goals obliterated

Before we get on to Anomalies, we wanted to give a huge shout-out to everyone who helped us spread the word over the past few days! With all those Facebook/Twitter shares and BoardGameGeek exposure, you've directly helped us reach a much wider audience, and for that we are eternally grateful. In return, we now have heat printed player and pirate ships in all base copies of Drop Drive!

The white player ship comes in the 5th Player Pack

Awesome Anomaly animation

Our wonderful animation gnomes (also know as Darrin!) have whipped up a neat little animation to better demonstrate how Anomalies are initially encountered in space and then take on a life of their own...  using the dreaded Death Dodecahedron as an example of course! Check it out:

We'll convert this to an animated GIF to add to the campaign page soon enough, but wanted you all to have a chance to see it first!

Update on "A Fifth Element?!!" Anomaly

We've seen some fantastic submissions come in from the community for our Fifth Element based Anomaly. You can check them out and add additional submissions here:

Submit your ideas for the Fifth Element based Anomaly

LIVESTREAM TOMORROW: Once again, we will be livestreaming our review of the submissions that have come in so far - we love doing that, and it seems you all love it too! We will start at 8:30pm Eastern tomorrow (Friday, October 8th). You can join us live at any of the following links:

If you still have new ideas to submit, get them in soon so we can cover them live tomorrow!

Update on Dropgate Anomaly

Unless anything changes drastically in the next 7 hours, it looks like we have a clear winner emerging for the Dropgate anomaly. But if you haven't already, you still have time to cast your final vote:

Dropgate community poll

ANOMALY DETECTED: Belters Bazaar

You've likely seen the image above on our campaign page, but we never really explained what's going on with it! So here's what we're thinking (subject to further refinement, of course):

LARGE ASTEROIDS: The Belters Bazaar Anomaly will add large asteroid tokens to the game (punchboard tiles). These will be placed in a ring formation, relatively equidistant from the sun. These will create areas of space that are more difficult to traverse - you can fly your ship over/through one of these tiles, perhaps to collect smaller cargo that are on top of them, but you cannot move your ship on to and off of a large asteroid in the same turn.

BELTERS BAZAAR TILE: This Anomaly will also introduce a new Belters Bazaar tile, placed to the side of the board with the planet cards. Whenever a player ends their turn with their ship on one of the large asteroids tokens, they may automatically dock with the Belters Bazaar. At the Bazaar, players will be able to buy and sell resources and Explore cards in very different ways from normal. One idea we have is that certain (visible) Passengers, Specimens, and Ship Upgrades are available to be purchased using a simple bidding/auction mechanic, and any cards that you sell there would be available for other players to purchase later on.

As with all Anomalies, a lot more fleshing out and testing needs to be done, but we wanted to give you a sense of how this one might work in general. Feel free to offer your own additional thoughts or ideas - by no means have we figured everything out yet, so we're happy to consider other ideas!

Cheers!

Welcome to Week 2 - many updates!
over 2 years ago – Thu, Oct 07, 2021 at 09:42:06 AM

Happy Tuesday!

We've got a few great updates for you today as we kick off week 2, so let's get to it!

Social Stretch Goals added

Firstly, let's try to get a signal boost out there. Yesterday was a bit of a setback for us, since most of our marketing efforts are Facebook based...  Facebook being down for 6 hours was not exactly part of our plan!

For a few shares/retweets/thumbs, we will unlock all the heat-printed ship tokens!

See below for the links you will need to participate

Let's get those ship tokens heat-printed for awesome effect! Here's the links you will need to participate:

  • Share this post on Facebook (and add your own comment!)
  • Retweet this post on Twitter
  • Give this picture a THUMBS UP on BoardGameGeek
  • Leave a comment explaining what you're most excited about for Drop Drive on BoardGameGeek: Go to the Drop Drive page and then click one of the star icons next to My Rating - there you will be able to leave a comment

Anomaly update (and poll!): Dropgate

After much analysis, we are super pleased to announce that the Ancient Interstellar Gate Network can now be referred to simply as Dropgate :D

Scott, Darrin, and I went through all your submissions for this anomaly and discussed our reactions, observations, and possibilities. If you missed the livestream, you can re-watch it here:

After further analysis and discussion, we came out with 3 possible packages for this anomaly, so of course now it's time to vote on your favorite! Head on over to BoardGameGeek to check out the details and cast your votes:

ANOMALY DETECTED: A Fifth Element?!!!

And this takes us to the next community designed Anomaly, which will be themed to 5th Element!

We want to give you some ideas to get your creative juices flowing again, but Good lord where do I start with this one?! Flying taxis, world-eating blobs, overly enormous weaponry, Ruby Rohd!, The Diva, element stones (of course!), ancient prophecy, alien protectors, luxury lunar liners, and of course, MULTI-PASS!

There's SO much content packed in that little movie, and we can't wait to see what you come up with again - so head over to BoardGameGeek and get your submissions added:

Live Anomaly Analysis tonight!
over 2 years ago – Sun, Oct 03, 2021 at 11:03:26 PM

Happy Sunday!

We've hit another tremendous milestone, 1000+ backers, and we crushed another 2 Stretch Goals since yesterday's update!

Live Anomaly Analysis

We invite you to join us live tonight at 8:30pm Eastern, when Scott, Darrin, and I will deep dive into each of the community submissions for the Ancient Interstellar Gate Network Anomaly. We will explain our understanding the various ideas and offer our own thoughts in response. We did this during the previous Dungeon Drop: Dropped Too Deep campaign, and it was a blast!

You can join us live at any of the following links:

If you still have new ideas to submit, get them in today so we can cover them live tonight!

That's it for now - hope to see you tonight!

Anomaly Tracker Report
over 2 years ago – Sat, Oct 02, 2021 at 10:44:42 PM

Good morning!

We wanted a way to pull together all the up-to-date details on the various Anomaly activities, so here's our first official Anomaly Tracker Report! We will send this out periodically throughout the campaign, as various new Anomalies are detected and/or designed.

Top voted sci-fi universes

Before we get to the actual report, let's review the final results from the Favorite Sci-Fi Universes community poll. This poll fluctuated QUITE a lot in its last 24 hours, but we're thrilled with where it landed. Here's the top 10 voted universes, in order:

  • 5th Element
  • Star Trek / Orville
  • Stargate
  • The Expanse
  • Firefly
  • Ender's Game
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
  • Aliens / Predator
  • Titan AE
  • Men in Black

Now, does that mean that the top 4 items on the list are the exact 4 we will design in collaboration with the community? Likely, but it doesn't mean you won't see others on this list emerge as well - there are plenty of opportunities for new Anomalies to pop up throughout this campaign!

As per our previous update, we are already proceeding with the community designed, Stargate themed Anomaly ("Ancient Interstellar Gate Network"). There are some amazing ideas that have already been submitted, and you can continue to add new ideas here:

That's it for now - let's keep scanning for new Anomalies!!

ANOMALY DETECTED: Ancient interstellar gate network
over 2 years ago – Thu, Sep 30, 2021 at 08:09:16 PM

Let's start designing together!

While the poll for your favorite science-fiction universes will stay open for about 1 more day, the results clearly show that Stargate will be among the top choices. As such, we're thrilled to kick off our first Anomaly design effort!

For those who are new to our campaigns, here's how this community design process generally works:

  • First, we create a forum thread on BoardGameGeek for your idea submissions. At the very top of that thread will be the general rules and guidance for your submissions. You can add and discuss as many ideas as you wish in the thread!
  • After a couple days, we go through all the submissions (possibly live!), and curate a list of the ones that we believe will fit best with the game, utilize reasonable components, and would have manageable rules associated.
  • Then we post a final poll for the community to vote on their favorite ideas in the list. Unless there's some unusual circumstances, the top most voted item is fully fleshed out and added to the final product (in this case, added to the "Complete set of Anomaly Packs" product)!
  • Most of all, everyone has a blast being part of this collaborative ideation and design process!

End to end, the entire process will take about 1 week, and we intend to do at least 4 of these throughout the campaign (there may be some overlap as we proceed).

So let's get on to our first design effort...

Ancient interstellar gate network

Based on the interests poll, Stargate emerged as the #1 favorite science fiction universe (after removing Star Wars and 2 others, since we already have those covered). There's so much great content in the Stargate universe, so we expect some extremely varied idea submissions!

Here are some of the iconic elements in the Stargate universe off the top of our heads, and some probing questions to help get your creative juices flowing:

  • Stargate network: Of course this is THE most iconic aspect of the movie and spinoff TV series. We can definitely imagine some mechanics that will allow for easy travel between worlds... but we would encourage folks to think about more than just this most obvious aspect. Are there other elements that could be pulled into an Anomaly pack as well? What about the super-gate that connects different galaxies? What about hostile enemies that might be guarding one or more gates?
  • Ancients, Naquadah: The builders of gate network, and the unique material used to create it. Could this become some new type of resource in the game?
  • Asgardians, Jaffa, Tok'ra: Various allies and factions in the universe. New NPC opportunity perhaps?
  • Goa'uld, Replicators, Ori, Wraiths: Various enemies in the universe. New Pirate ship opportunity perhaps? Could there be a traitor mechanic introduced because a player was infected with a Goa'uld parasite?
  • Pyramid ships, Atlantis, Daedalus: Various ships and bases in the universe. Could Atlantis perhaps be found somewhere in the depths on the water planet, Brine?

As always, don't get too hung up on precise mechanics... focus on general thoughts about how different thematic elements could be brought into the game, how they may change things up for the game, etc. Feel free to offer component or rules suggestions as a starting point, but obviously we'll work to flesh those out over time.

Click the button below to post your ideas to BoardGameGeek, and then in a few days we'll curate the ideas and flesh out a final list of viable candidates for everyone to vote on. Let's go!

We can't wait to see what you come up with! Cheers!
